Stupid simple questions about neck-joint truss rod

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all!

I bought a Fender Mike Dirnt Precision bass just a week ago and it came with massive relief - the neck is bowed like a banana. Well, it has a neck-joint truss rod and I was wondering if it matters whether I remove the neck fully from the body or just remove the pickguard, loosen the strings and tighten the rod from a slight angle. I already turned it this way 1/2 of a turn (the maximum per day I've heard) and was wondering if I did the wrong thing.

Also, how do you know when to stop adjusting your truss rod? It wasn't very tight when I turned it but I'm still afraid of turning another 1/2 of a turn (the strings are now playable but a 1 -2 mm adjustment in relief would do wonders).

So, anything special to look out for and am I doing the right thing? Don't want to ruin my 750 € baby now.

forget the "per day" nonsense, you've only heard that from people who don't know what they're doing. turn the rod until the neck is where you want it to be and get on with your life.

you'll only risk damaging it if it's already really tight and you try to force it further.
