Stupid Vintage Tuners

What are some good replacements for the SUPER crappy vintage tuners? I bought my bass used a while ago ('71 P) and the tuners are pissing me off to high heaven.

Is it alll original? ... the bass that is

Tell ya what, if it is ... put the bass up for sale on eBay, "as is" and buy yourself a Made in Japan version (scratch that) a MIM version and modify it to your hearts content.

... Don't rip up an orginal P bass!

Right...

I know what I am working with here, no need to insult me. The tuners are vintage replacements from the guy before me and it is far from original (just original body, neck, and pups- though it has been refin.) I bought it as a players bass for the vintage tone- and while I understand you THINK you know everything, try not to be an ass. The tuners need to go, they have a gigantic pit in them that constantly messes strings up.

No insult ... more of a "STRONG" warning about about making that kinda change on an original bass ( please note you did not state it had already been modded ) ... you said " 71 P"

... OK all bets are off now ... have at it ... use what ever works

I don't think you can say no insult after reccomending me to get a MIM- I woulnd't even buy an MIA these days, I can't stand what they have done with their basses. I searched far and wide for a bass to suit my tonal needs and never expected to find a vintage so reasonable as mine but it needs some work- particularly a new bridge and tuners plus a fret touchup- but for 1100 I was pretty quick to buy.

Yea I am definitely putting a badass in- I still want cosmetic fender tuners so I am in a slight quandary- maybe its just the way I am wrapping my strings? it is VERY frustrating- the strings just slide out. I bought it from an LA session player who replaced the originals with replacement vintages... I dont really get it.

I beg your pardon for my severe lack of understanding your situation,it won't happen again. Being a novice at this sort of thing I over stepped my bounds ... sorry.

So he already replaced the tuners? I don't see how they can just slide out, you must be wrapping it wrong.

You are sticking the end of the string into the shaft right? (there's a hole.)

Then you just bend it 90 degrees and turn the actual tuner until it's up to pitch.

Sorry to treat you like a kid, I'm sure you know this, but I've never seen a string slip out of the tuner.

I would not recomend to replace the original Fender steel plate bridge with a badass. Some time ago a friend repalced his badass with the original Fender bridge (he had been wise enough to save it) and was very suprised to find out the sound actually improved that much.
By the way what do you mean by "slide out". If you string a bass correctly there is no way the strings slide out, no matter what tuners you use. Have some one to help you stringing.

I think it may have been the strings I just put in, I've changed sets a number of times but my last set were literally sliding out. I appreicate the heads up on the badass though.

And no hard feelings about the comment Kenny
