sustain help needed

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a '92 Fender Standard Jazz. I have EB flats on it and it sounded pretty good but me, not knowing what I was doing, screwed with the bridge height. Now the E,A,and D sounds good with good sustain but the G has no sustain at all when fretting. An open G is fine but when I used a fret(any) there is no sustain. What causes this? Do you think the string is too low? If so, should I try turning the screws on the saddle clockwise to raise? When turning the screws, what increments do I turn at(1/4, 1/2 turns ect.)? I know, I should have never messed with it but that's just me I guess. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Or the pickup height could be too low or high on the G side...

Ok, I raised the G saddle one complete turn and it helped some. Now there is some sustain. When raising the pickup, is anything needed to "shim" under it to hold it in place? Can I put some packing foam or something under it to let the pickup raise and stay in place? I loosened the screws but they just backed out, the pu didn't raise. I think I need to remove the pick guard to allow it to move. This is an old MIM and I did buy it used off of Ebay so....
