Sustain problem on my Spector

Sign in to disble this ad
Last week I thought I would do some spring cleaning on my Euro and so I cleaned up the body, neck and fret board. I loosened all the strings and unhooked them from the bridge but kept them on the tuners while I did the fretboard. I cleaned it up and dried it off and put the strings back on and did some intonation.

Now my low B string at the 12th fret doesn't have the sustain any more. All the other strings have their sustain except the B. It plays for about 3 or 4 seconds before the string stops vibrating. I've tried loosening and tightening it, cleaned off the string really good, made sure the saddle was stable and seated properly. Does anyone have an idea what else could be the problem?

It's a Spector Euro neck-through. All the other strings still have their sustain, even the B as an open string. The strings were new last summer and I only play this bass at church on Thrusdays and Sundays. Please let me know what you think!

Thanks!

I'd buy that for a dollar or That would be where to start. Although I usually will Boil my set at least once and re-use them, before I discard them in the spare string pile.

Yeah my next try was going to be to put a new low B on there. But before I did, I was hoping to get some opinions on the problem.

I had the strings off for maybe 10 minutes at the most while cleaning the fret board and then put them back on. The strings were just fine before and this dead spot on the 12th was not there. Even now the other notes on the Low B sustain like normal, it's just at the 12 the vibration of the string seems to die.

Also if you knew me, you would know that I wash my hands before I play and wipe the bass and strings down afterwards. Like I said this bass is played on Thursdays and Sundays only for a total of about 4 hours a week. So that's why I can say they were new last summer. They still have plenty of zing left in them. I can't believe that all of a sudden they decided to die after having them off the bass for 10 minutes.

A new low B?

You need to replace the lot of them. I'd wager a bet that its the reason why your bass lacks sustain. That and you may have twisted the string when putting it back in the bridge.

After you did intonation did you slacken the strings and then re tighten them? Try that.

I didn't try slacking all the strings and retighten them. Some one else suggested that the core may have been damaged.

I don't know if the people suggesting new strings are reading me right here. The bass has great sustain on every string except the low B at the 12th fret. Before I loosened the strings to clean the board I didn't have this 12th fret problem; it only showed itself afterwards. Maybe the problem was the cleaner. I used orange glo on the board, but I don't think any got on the string since the string was off until after I cleaned the board and wiped it off.

I'll try loosening the string and make sure it's not twisted in any way.

Thanks
