Switch Plate Question

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi Fella's,

Recently I ordered a Hofner Pearloid switch plate cover and new Hofner tea cup knobs for my Rogue Bass. I took off the existing switch plate cover and it is all wired up to this plate, therefore I can not replace the existing plate with the new one unless I get the copper piece that all the wires are connected to off the existing plate and glue on the new one.

How to go about this? Or... should I take it to a bass guitar repair guy to do the job? I don't want to get myself into a heap of trouble here and ruin everything just to have a more Beatle looking bass.

Thanks Guys,

Mickey:

Like there's metal on the back of the old switchplate & every ground connects to this?

One choice is to put the new plate over the old plate.

Another is to disconnect the grounds then reconnect them to one spot, like the back of a pot.

Hi Dave,

The existing switch plate has a copper plate on the underside and the wires are attached to this and then to the pickups inside the bass. I need to open it up again and take a better look but by the looks of this plate those wires are connected to it. I can't even get the existing knobs off the existing plate as I am not sure how to get them off. These 2 knobs do not pull off and appear as though they are held firmly in place by a sort of nut. These two knobs control the volume (pot knobs?)

Now, I don't wish to screw this up but I will take another look and get back to you as I do not have the bass with me right now. I may try to place the switch plate over top the old one but I can't get the knobs off and I would need longer screws to hold both plates in place if I even could get them off.

Thanks,

Mickey

Knobs & pots. Pots are the things that get bolted onto the plate & have wires soldered to them. Knobs go on the protruding Pot shafts to make the shafts larger & better-looking. (Apologies if over-explaining. I CAN do that at times.)

Sounds like what might be best is to outsource the modification. For a decent tech this is a quick & easy task, & buying one hour of shop time will save you a lot of worries.
