Switching necks?

My four string P/J bass is all fine and dandy except in one instance, it's only got 20 frets. Would it be okay to switch necks and put on a 24 fret neck? The reason I ask is I do not know if I could possibly adjust the intonation to be correct if it made the scale length slightly bigger.

Switching to a 24 fret neck won't make your scale length longer. So if you can find a Fender type neck that has 24 frets, the extra 4 frets will hang over and extend into the body from the point where the 20th fret is on your current neck. They will be very hard to play unless you cut some more off the bottom cutaway of the body. I say it's a mistake. If you want a 24 fret bass, buy another one.

warmoth makes 24 fret necks liscensed by fender. this wont change your scale length, but you may still have to reset intonation.
