SX Body and MIJ Neck

Sign in to disble this ad
I've got a lovely (sound wise) MIJ P bass with a basswood body. Trouble is the body has been stripped and varnished (badly) showing it's 4 piece construction.

Should I pay a luthier around £150 to finish it in nitro, or pay around £130 for a 'Jim Deacon' (UK trade name for SX) bass - use the body and have lots of bits left over?

The big question is mainly....

...will the P neck fit the body?

...Will it drastically alter the tone

...Will anyone know the difference?

Regards

Col

I'm considering doing the same with my SX P and a CIJ P neck that I have re-discovered at my parents house. Can't find an answer on here. Guess I'll bring the neck up and see how it measures in coparisont to the SX neck pocket.

There was some discussion on this not too long ago in the "Basses" section of the forum. I cant look it up at the moment, but I want to say that the SX neck pocket is (if memory serves) a bit bigger than a Fender (or Squire) neck. Again, I'm not positive, but I seem to recall reading that. On a side note, I know someone put an Ephiphone/Gibson neck (4 in a row keys) on an SX. Check out the basses section......I think it was in that massive Essex thread.

I would not pay someone to refinish a guitar like this ... I have done refins and its pretty easy. Go to http://www.reranch.com/ and go down thru the refinishing 101 section. You just need to take your time and go slow with lots of dry time in between. Nitro is soft and lovely for a finish.

Well..........it's all over bar the shouting! Got the body refinished - the luthier charged me £130, not £150, and it looks superb.

Cheers for your help!
