SX bridge string size?

Sign in to disble this ad
So I bought a set of Ernie Ball Roundwounds and they were the regular cheaper 22 dollar set of strings, but better than the stock ones. So I put on all my strings one at a time, taking off the old one and putting the new one on starting with the G string. So I get to my E, its just a regular 105 gauge string, and when I was lacing it through the bridge, it would not fit at the end of the string where it is round thicker, before the ball. So right now its on, its tight, but the E is sticking out half an inch out of the bridge on the backside. I am a little disappointed because I wanted to get an even thicker string because I tune it to C#. Anyways, do I find another size string set? End up replacing the bridge, or is there something I can do make that hole larger? Any help would be appreciated. The bass is the sjb-75 3cts.

I had the same problem. I used a small round file to increase the hole size. It only takes a minute. You can find these files at just about any hardware store. I got mine at Harbor Freight. It came in a set with about a dozen different files.

I use a drill myself their B string on the 5ers is notorious for the same thing. but he is talking about a hand file like you would use for nut carving for instance

I have the same damn problem on my SX P. I'm going to upgrade to a Gotoh 201 bridge before i put my 115 strings on, but i think i'll still have to shave the bridge

Thanks, man. Is there a certain size file in the kit that i should use for a gauge of strings going .50, .70, .95, .115? And how exactly should i do it? Just go in there and file away and keep checking my string until it fits? Would this work for filing the nut for that set of strings too?

It will be obvious which file to use once you have them in hand and sit down to do the job. I think I used the tapered oval file. I only had to remove a little bit of material to get the string to pass through. I was careful to keep the hole round and not leave any burrs.

I've used these files to make *very* minor adjustments to both guitar and bass nuts, as well as removing sharp fret ends, but I don't recommend it because you can easily over do it. I certainly wouldn't want to try cutting a nut from a blank with these.
