SX nut replacement

Sign in to disble this ad
I have an SJB-62 lined fretless on its way to me and I have heard that the nuts on these basses are plastic. Does anyone know if they are like the older fender style with the curve in the groove for the nut or if the bottom of the nut is flat like the newer MIM's?

I have a fender replacement nut, just need to file the grooves into it and instead of a flat base, the base is curved to match the curvature of the fretboard.

If this one doesn't work I want to order a new blank before it gets here. Since I'm out in the sticks there is noone local to purchase it from.
Thanks!

any help is appreciated....

They are flat on the bottom. At least, mine is.

The stock nut that came on mine is very decent. I didn't see any advantage to changing it out. The slots needed deepening quite a bit on mine to get the action at the nut low enough. They definitely will benefit from a good setup.

The thickness of the nut is only about 1/8". You'll need to keep that in mind when you order the blank.

I got a Trem-Nut nut, pre-cut, at 1/8 thick.

It was pretty darn close right outta the package. I needed to take about .025 off the bottom of it, and trim/smooth the sides to fit, but it was no biggie. Once installed, I worked on individual slots to get the action perfect. No complaints whatsoever. As has been said though, there's really nothing inherently wrong with the stock plastic one. The only reason I changed mine is 'cause I totally modded my SX and basically wanted to swap out everything. That and the fact that I wanted a black nut to go with the black blocked and bound neck
