I'm thinking about getting one of these things:

Only I hate that neck. I want a maple neck and fretboard, with a maple headstock, all the same color, as pictured here on this bass:

I like the PJ bass with black body, black pickguard, and maple. I think it looks the best

What are my options as far as replacing the neck? Do I have to get an SX brand neck, or can I get something like a Fender neck?

Also what mods can you recommend for this bass. What kind of bridge, nut, and pickups do you like.

Thanks

The time and money you spend on getting what you want from
sx, you might want to look a product that already has a maple neck. Squire's have gotten a really great writeup on this site and are generally compared to the Fender MIM's. This is the Peter Wentz model

The price for the Pete Wentz is 279 in MF.
I say buy both SX's that way you have 2 basses and a really nice project in your hands. SX's are really nice basses that allow you to experiment without the fear of damaging a major value instrument.
As for mods take a look at what TBer Eric618 did with his:
SX Jazz Surgery

I agree with you on getting the 2 SX's. I mentioned the Wentz because not all of us like or know how to build parts basses. If you have to have it done by someone else then your project will be way above the price of the Squier. I personally have 2 parts basses and loved putting them together but if I include my time then it would have been just as easy to buy something complete.

You're absolutely right.
I proposed buying the two because I myself would like to have a project like that. It's fun to play with tools, especially without adult supervision.
