Thanks for the reply. You nailed the crux of the issue for me and for many who are drawn to the fretless: "I like fretless but only when somebody else is playing it."

LMAO

You've boiled down into one concise sentence the many confusing internal arguments I've been wrestling with for months. FACT: I love to hear JacoP and others on fretless, but I am JacoNOT for the forseeable future... I think I'd better get a complete grasp of 'this fretted thang' first. Thanks.

Devil's advocate:
Fretless takes considerable dedication at the beginning, but I've read many comments by fretless players who say, now that they've developed the skills, they're no longer satisfied with playing fretted basses...I'm just sayin'...
