T-40 truss adjustment

Sign in to disble this ad
I had a bow after installing 45 -105 DR strings and made a truss adjust tool and cranked about a 1/3 cw turn.

Does it look too flat now? I read that there is suppose to be a small about of bow.

Also, can you tell if the tilt needs a bit of adjusting? I mean it looks like it could use a little tweak to me.

Here's a short vid of it:

As nice as the video is, I have to question whether anyone can tell anything definitive.

There is a matter of preference involved in setting relief, so there isn't necessarily a "correct" amount. If you have back back-bowing, you're going to have problems.

If it plays okay, I guess it's not too close to flat.

To check your relief, hold down the E string at the first and last frets and look for the distance between the string and fret tops around the midpoint (~9th?). .5 mm is a typical number. Again, if your concern is being too flat, I really think the proof is in the playing. If it feels right, and you're not getting buzzes, then I don't see how someone can look at it and say it doesn't have enough relief.

Yeah, it was hard to get the camera exactly where I wanted it.

Hmmm..... about .5mm at the 9th fret is about what it is.

Ok, thanx for the info. I really appreciate it.

How does it FEEL to play? Does it buzz from first to 12th fret? From 12th up?.

The only reason to tilt the neck is if you can't get action low enough using the saddles.

If it plays to your liking as it is, leave it. If not read the sticky about setups and learn how to do it step by step. There is a set order of steps to follow when setting up your bass.

Learn the LINGO: BOW means the neck is bent toward the back of the bass: toward you when you hold it. BUZZZZ

RELIEF is when it is bent toward the front of the bass: away from you. Relieves buzzing but can be too much affecting intonation and playability.

READ THE STICKY and have fun!!

I missed the Sticky on adjustment but I did have the manual handy which takes you thru step by step.

Going by my SR500 that was set up at a local shop, the T-40 strings didn't look as parallel to the neck.... so I just adjusted the tilt a few minutes ago. Not much, maybe little over a quarter turn cc.

It seems to be better now. No real bad buzzing going to the 12th fret or beyond it after readjust the saddles a bit. I still need to play a few tunes to really test it.

I appreciate the help.
