tapping set-up

Sign in to disble this ad
This is a classic case of an old dog trying to learn some new tricks. Thought I'd try my hand(s) at tapping, so I'm searching for some advice on the optimal set-up. I know I'll have to lower my action, but how low, and what about string gauge?

In my opinion, you'll want an action that is low enough that the strings will buzz just a tiny bit when you play a little extra hard in your standard style of playing (not tapping).

Also, all things being equal, lighter gauge strings will be under less tension and will thus be looser than heavier gauge strings. These looser strings will be easier to push down while tapping, so I'd say go a little lighter on the string gauges.

Also, keep in mind that you may have to make some slight adjustments to the setup of the bass if you change the string gauges.

Happy tappin'

'40 - '95 strings works good for me
bring the strings as low as you can without fret buzz.
Bring the treble high if you have an active bass, on j bass turn your neck pup a bit down.
I would also suggest a to put something to mute your open strings while your tapping. Like a hairband or something on your 1st fret just bellow the nut.
This is my opinion only, you can have tons of different set ups for tapping, everyone uses what' comfortable for them.
