Is there a dfference between g**tar pots and bass pots?

I can't find anything to lead me to believe there's a difference, but I thought I'd ask before I buy a new harness for my EB3 clone.

Here's the deal: On my EB3 3 out of four pots are bad, the fourth is questionable. There's a seller on EscamTM with a SG harness that on appearance looks to be a good replacement- remove the old harness solder the pups to the "new " one and I'm off.

Couple of concerns are if the shafts are a different length or thickness, and what the pots are rated at(500 vs 250 ohm).

If the harness is in good working condition, is there anything else that might make this a bad idea?

Gibson as far as i remember generally only use 500k pots as opposed to the 250k ones normally found on Fenders.

if they are a different value (eg 250k instead of 500k) they will give you a slightly different sound.

Try and find a wiring schematic for the SG (gibson or SD might have one on their websites) if all the wires look like they go to the same pots as your own one and any caps fitted to the tone controls are the same value then you should be okay.

Is there a reason that the seller is selling a complete wiring harness? if it is in order to wire up the pickups on his own guitar differently to standard then you should be okay but if not try and make sure that the posts aren't shot. If they are then they'll crackle and may work intermittently. Switch cleaner is a temporary fix as scratchy or intermtitent pots are usually a sign that they are on their way out.

Have you tried looking for a retailer that can get you a new harness?

Not a difference in pots. Just be sure the resistance is correct for your application, and check split shaft v. solid shaft. With the harness, you might also want to check the capacitance of the new capacitors against the old.

yes, as above... check whether the pots are 500k or 250k and whether the shafts are solid or split/knurled.

Thanks, everyone. They're the 500k, like the ones in my Electra, and as near as I can see the wiring is the same. I can't tell about the capacitors, and the seller wasn't sure. They're a different color- isn't that an indication they have a difference resistance? i thought I read that somewhere.

As far as what's wrong with them and why he's selling them, that's one of the things I'll need to ask. Idiot me, I didn't ask.

The only reason I found them is I was looking for a wiring harness for my jazz bass, and there it was. I figured it'd be cool to drop Gibson parts into my Gibby rip-off and the price at the moment is cheap.
