I wonder why they wouldn't just adjust their router so the hole isn't being put on the body... laziness?

That's a real shame! I know it's stupid, but that makes me think twice about my potential purchase of an American Standard P bass coming up.

If I really needed that inconspicuous of a spot to hide my stash, I'd probably just take the control plate off and stash it in there. Lots of room!

That explains the white powder in the hole!!

It's actually polishing compound.

Were you planning on removing the pickguard on your P bass? Personally I like my P's with a guard so it wouldn't affect anything for me

Haha I have opened enough Mexican Fenders and have always wondered what the hell that stuff is

It's just to prevent bass of doom copies xD

Nah, probably CNC guidance. It's on my MIM strat too.

Yup. Polishing compound gets in the and since a pickguard covers it, they don't bother cleaning it out.

I'm really considering the cork idea. My bass has some great grain, and I'd love to go nekkid.

The hole is for CNC purposes. There are a couple models without it, but I forget which ones.

Good, one more thing to keep me from buying the Anniversary model besides that darn black pickguard. Such a shame that hole is there. No excuse for it on US models.

*and I'm sure todays drug cartels would have no problem packing 3-4oz of coke in one of those holes. Think if they did that in one of every 10 MIM's that came over the border...

It's the same with my '97 MIA Jazz. The only solution for me is to sell it. I think all the newer Fenders have this and it's just a shame that you don't have the option to remove your pickguard or put on a clear one.

agreed! that is my one complaint about american standard jazz basses, the hole as well as the big ugly rout around the neck pickup, both of which rule out the cool pickguardless look.

I'd personally go with oxy- pills. Good business up in the great white north. Lots of oxy-heads.

Personally, I don't see what the big deal is, I prefer leaving the pickguard on anyway, that kinda thing doesn't bother me.

I'm the same way, used to bother me when I wanted to go pickguard less but now I appreciate the design of the Fenders with their guards on. Life's too short to worry about that stuff

Maybe the holes are there to discourage people from trying to pass it off as a vintage instrument (the Road Worn series anyway) when selling it used to an unsuspecting buyer.

If that's the case, they should've put the hole in the cheaper models. My 60th is a $1500 bass!! Put the hole in the Roadworn!!
