Out of curiosity and knowledge for knowledge's sake, what type of things would crack a nut?

Tuning up an octave too high. A buddy bought an old Yamaha 10 or 12 years ago at a guitar show and in his NBD excitement did just this.

This bass was a Nippon Gakki built semi-acoustic hollowbody I'd never seen before but actually saw a shot of John Paul Jones playing one in the studio with Them Crooked Vultures just prior to their debut.

Wow.

I really enjoy this forum, but the sexism that is routinely displayed here is jaw-dropping.

It wouldn't be easy however IF the nut design were very thin and the string were bent down from the nut to the string tree or tuning peg; it may happen from a quite wide B or E if the saddle cut was wide or deep enough to not have enough strength to support the pressure or a fast tuning, etc. The common idea that a brass unit would increase sustain is inconclusive but it certainly wouldn't crack like bone if too little support remained.
Of course there is always impact.....you drop your instrument and it hits on the nut....-=bad scene=-

So if I were to take B string, stick it in an E slot, and keep tuning up, up, up, the chance of the nut breaking is pretty good?
