Thinning a finish

I'm currently doing a parts Jazz Bass. The body is Crimsonburst and I think it would look fantastic after a bit of natural relicing. How would I go about thinning the finish a little to speed up the process, without ruining it, ie. sanding.

What finish did you use?

Steel wool? I'd think that would gently take some of the gloss off of the finish, make it a bit more matte - if that's what you are going for.

Some finishes, like nitro lacquer and shellac can be dissolved and partially wiped off to give a thinner finish. But the rest won't dissolve in thinner once they're dry. Paint remover (stripper) would make a mess of it. So your only options are an abrasive like sandpaper or steel wool.

There are some threads on how to do relicing if you search.
