Threaded Inserts on a Not-Yet-Finished Neck

Sign in to disble this ad
If I'm getting a new, unfinished neck from Warmoth and want to do the threaded insert mod for the bolts to the body, does it make sense to finish the whole neck first, or install the inserts and then apply the finish? Also, should I order the neck without any holes drilled in the heel so that the holes for the inserts are the first and only holes drilled?

IMO, get the neck with no holes drilled, unfinished. Once you have the body and neck mated (clamped in position), then drill pilot holes for the bolt placement. Remove the neck and drill the required hole size for the inserts and install. I think this would ensure proper alignment. Once all the holes are drilled for the inserts and tuners, then apply the finish to Warmoth specs. JMO
