Thumb anchor/rest for new Geddy Lee Jazz

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok Ive got a new GL and wanted to put the old "thumb rest" next o the bridge PUP to anchor my thumb. I’ve done it a couple of ways in the past, the screw method and the epoxy method. I was able to take off one of the Epoxy rests with heat from a Blow dryer, the other one was not so easy, but I haven’t tried hard enough yet either. Anyway, I would hate to put some holes in the body (resale value just in case) and would hate not to be able to take it off after I epoxy it as well. So any other suggestions, maybe a type of epoxy/glue that can be removed much easier but still holds? Perhaps using an epoxy/glue like a weld around the rest that could be removed by using type of “remover” chemical?

Thanks for any help

I screwed mine on, I'm not sure what would be easily removable. I've been diggin on my hot glue gun a lot lately. Maybe tack it down with some of that? You might just have to replace the pick guard if you ever want to sell it.

Would two holes in the body really kill the basses resale value?

the idea I saw recently is to screw the thumbrest into the pickguard from behind--make a countersunk hole in the pickguard so the screws fit flush and won't scratch the paint, and there ya go. You just need a new pickguard to make it completely stock, otherwise it's just a couple of holes in the pickguard. No drilling to the body needed.

Sorry, guess I wasn't clear. I'm putting the thumb rest in front/top of the bridge pup. So I don't have to be resting my thumb on-top of the bridge pup. Not looking to put the old school thumb rest anchor underneath the string near the neck. So I will need to probably drill a couple of holes into the exposed paint or finish in front of the pup and behind the pick guard. Thanks for your help anyways guys!

Oh...well that makes sense. Damn battle scars. I don't think that you would be able to remove any epoxy/glue with chemicals and or heat with out killing the finish. Good Luck.

Maybe you will luck out if and when you go to sell the bass and somebody will be pumped on your modification. Have fun drilling!
