Question Thumb Rest ABG Install?

Sign in to disble this ad
Just wondering if anyone out there has tried installing a thumb rest on their acoustic bass. I've been looking on Ebay at ones such as this one and think that it would be a good addition to my Fender Kingman.

I can't imagine that simply screwing it in is a good idea - the wood is just too thin on the top of the bod. Rather, it would be better supported with some bolt-ended screws and maybe some extra wood on the inside of the bass.

If anyone has any ideas, photos, etc. I would appreciate it.

I fabricated a thumb rest for my Brownsville ABG using a thin piece of brass flat stock. I drilled and tapped two holes for the thumb rest in it. I cut the brass to fit on the upper- side of the sound hole and made the sure the brass was just long enough to fit in between the bracing. I used countersink machine screws and put lock nuts on the other side. There are no holes in the top of the body and it just clamps on the edge of the sound hole. It sound confusing, I will post pics of it later tonight or tomorrow.

I actually practice a lot on my ABG. It makes my right hand finger speed faster, and has taught me how to float my hand over the strings. I love to get different tones from being near the bridge, over the sound hole, or on the neck. I don't think I would ever put a thumb rest on for that reason.

If I were to ever consider it, I would likely go with some sort of ramp between the bridge and sound hole (assuming you have a traditionally set up ABG). That way I would have the advantage of a ramp and maybe extend it to act as a thumb rest. I'm sure there are some cool, non-harmful adhesives to achieve this. Putting a screw into the soundboard doesn't make me feel too warm and fuzzy...

Just a thought.

Doubl sided tape is your friend. Or you could do what I do and use the edge of the fingerboard as a thumbrest.
