thumpy carvin

Two questions on the setup of my bass: I have a Carvin LB 75 with p/j pickups. I love the tone, but when i pluck the string normally, there is a very loud, toneless thump that is often much louder than the sweet tone itself. What is wrong? I thought it might be the pickup height or the low string tension. Second question is if there is anything I can do to raise the string tension without throwing the intonation out of whack.

are your pole pieces exposed....

could be popping off the pole pieces...

the only way to increase string tension is to go to a heavier gauge string...

where'd you get a P/J carvin? what year is it?
