Is it time for a setup?

I have a Geddy Lee I have for about 7 months. It's gotten light use around the house, but always cared for. I really don't know how to do proper setups and think I may be getting some fret buzz. Is it true if it doesnt buzz out of the amp, then theres no buzz? I was playing without an amp tonight and noticed some buzzing. I really don't wanna screw anything up so I was going to run it by a shop up the road. Let me know what you think.

Playing with a lighter touch doesn't mean to sissy finger it. You can still get a nice articulate tone, just be careful of how hard you are thwacking the strings. Also, pluck on top of the bridge pickup. The string has less give there and you can pluck harder without the string rattling so much.

Playing lighter is one way of minimizing fret buzz, but IMO it's best to address the problem by FIRST getting a good set up. It's not always necessary to change a playing technique/style that is otherwise working for you. That would be a pretty drastic way to fix what is usually just a simple set up problem.

Part of the reason people get their basses set up is to adjust the bass to match their playing style. It's sort of like driving someone else's car; you're very likely to get in that car and adjust the mirrors, the seat, etc., to match YOU the person who is driving.

I'd reccomend taking it to a good set up tech and explain or let them see your playing style. Let them set it up according to how you play and see if you like that.
