Tinted Lacquer Finish

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all,
I want to do a transparent stain/lacquer finish on a bass body and wanted to know if anyone has any experience with this.
I've been looking at Trans Tints for the actual color part and final coating with Behlens Luthier lacquer.

Any tips on how to do this is greatly appreciated.

I'm finishing up 2 projects right now with transparent black satin lacquer.

I would offer a couple pointers if you're new to using tinted lacquer.
TransTint is VERY concentrated. Just a few drops goes a long way. I use a container about 7 ounces lacquer and add just 3-5 drops. Mix thoroughly.
Use gloss lacquer for color and do satin clear coats if that's what you want (obviously if you want gloss, don't use satin at all).
Don't even think of using a brush - spray only.
Do a first coat of clear and sand well before building any color.
Only use good sandpaper - Norton or other - it's well worth the money.

There's plenty more tips on Talkbass and internet.

Thanks BT.
I am going with the Trans Tint. And I just discovered a great site for refinishing:
www.reranch.com
There's a ton of advice and tips in the forums and a "How To" section for all kinds of refinishing.

I'll post some pictures once I get started on the color process.
