Tips for setting up a Ricky

Sign in to disble this ad
I've set up a few basses in my time, but I've just been asked to set up a Rickenbacker, which I've never done before.

It's the dual truss rods I'm concerned about and keeping them in balance. I think it's a 4003.

Any tips?

Thanks.

There is no real trick here. It works exactly as you would think. The rods control bass and treble sides of the neck. They also interact. Generally speaking, the treble side of the neck requires a little less relief than the bass side. Set the neck up with similar relief on both sides to establish a base line. Make fine adjustments from there.

Here's the link to Rickenbacker's Online Owner's Manual:

http://www.rickenbacker.com/pdfs/manual.pdf

Go to page 5 for the skinny on adjusting a Ricky neck.

Oh, and be mindful of the caution about what kind of tool to use... and that September 1984 transition date from old to new truss rod systems!
