Tokai truss rod adjustment

Sign in to disble this ad
Just bought year old Tokai Precision copy, it looks to me like the neck has to be removed to adjust the truss rod, can this really be the case? the opening at the tuners end of the neck is blanked off and the adjusting screw at the other end is half covered by the body

Yes, Leo got it right the first time.

Some people loosen the neck screws enough to tilt the neck back and adjust it without removal.

I'd not thought of that, but it's still a hit and miss affair as all the strings have to be slackened right off

Actually, I think it's one of the only things he got quite wrong! I put up with it on the basses I have with this feature, but it's a hassle nonetheless.

I use this method, too. Unfortunately I have to adjust all my basses for winter and summer as the humidity changes drastically.

Luckily, my Tokai APB '57 (P-Bass copy of which I just posted a pic of in the Vintage Japanese thread) hasn't need any more adjustment in the four or so years since I got it. I did it once and it's held stable. I hope your luck is as good.

I was being sarcastic. It's right up there with the Tele jack cup and the pole heights on Jazz Bass pickups.

I never knew why they thought that this was a good idea. Maybe you could carefully drill out an angled access hole to the adjustment screw since you said half of it is above the body already.
