Tongue oil on a Bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
Has anyone ever finished a natural wood bass with a Tongue Oil finish? I have done alot of fine gunstocks with it. Tongue oil done correctly is a very durable and beautiful finish, but I am wondering about the effects it might have on tone .

Tung is an an extremely common oil finish on natural basses. Go for it.

tung oil does not protect the wood from dents and scratches like lacquer or polyurethane. It is a good finish if you are concerned about the acoustic tone of the instrument. Violins and upright basses have relatively thin finishes on them compared to the "dipped in wet plastic" look of many electric instrunments

+1

I've finished several basses and guitars with Tung Oil (Tru-oil) and it really makes a difference in the tone of the instruments. Really lets the sound out, rather than Poly which seems to muffle the instrument, especially if it's thick.

It works but you have to take bites of KFC in between licks...and it would make your tongue sore.

Now, TUNG oil.... that is a different story and works well.

Personally I prefer Tru-Oil on gunstocks and bass necks over tung (not "tongue") oil.

Tru-Oil is not tung oil, it's mostly linseed oil (which is commonly used as the carrier for oil-based paint and also known as flax seed oil).

Isn't tongue oil just saliva?

Also- I believe that there is Tung Oil Finish that seals the wood and dries hard, and just pure Tung oil that I use on my natural finishes and fingerboards.

Be sure what you get.

The tung oil that I have used on gunstocks is very hard and dries very glossy. I hit it with 0000 steel wool and a tack rag in between coats. 20 coats gives a beautiful " hand rubbed finish" . I was mainly concerned about tone, but you guys have answered that for me. Thanks
