Tool size to adjust truss rod in Squire P-Bass

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi - not usually on this side of the forums.

I keep instruments around to lend out to students. I teach more guitar than anything else and have several, including smaller sizes for kids.

I just picked up a $100 used Squire Precision, but the 3/16" Allen key that fits my own MIM Precision doesn't go in - the tool is too big.

Can anyone tell me what size I might need? I don't especially feel like taking the bass to the hardware store but this is going to be my first neck adjustment and I can't start until I get the right tool.

Any links to guidance on doing this, e.g., are you supposed to reduce string tension before you adjust, etc., would also be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

From what I've gathered, you don't need to reduce string tension, but if you loosen the 2nd and 3rd strings, you'll have a lot more room to work with.

It's 4mm on mine, fender say to slacken the strings before adjusting the truss rod so I always have.

Thanks, folks. I'm pretty sure I have a 4 mm around here somewhere and I will give that a try.

Edit - went to the hardware store, got a 4 mm, worked like a charm, did my first neck adjustment which resulted in a huge improvement, and I'm happy.

Thanks again.
