Truss Rod Access on Fender Am Standard P

I just got a 2011 Fender American Standard P and it needs a little more relief. This is the first bass I've had where I couldn't get to the truss rod adjustment. It would appear that I have to take the pick guard off to get an allen wrench on it. What a pain! I tried with an angled wrench and a long T-Handle wrench and it's no go.

That's odd...the wrench usually works like a charm. Do you have any pics?

I can get to mine without taking the pickguard off.

Are you using the Fender t-handle wrench that's made for that bass?

I don't have the exact Fender wrench. I tried a similar 3/16 T handled Allen

The Fender T-handle wrench has kind of a rounded bottom that allows contact even at an angle. Really the best tool for the job. Look on this page where it says "4 new from $5.27"

Thanks, I'll order one. This has got to work.

The wrench also works on most MIM basses and it also works on my Squier CV Jazz. Just handy to have.

+1 on mexi's also using the 3/16", but not so sure about the CV squiers; most far east imports use metric specs, so you might be risking stripping out a 5mm hole with a 3/16" wrench.

Walter, all I can tell you is that it works good on mine. I won't vouch for any others, thanks. I don't want to give out any incorrect info.

With my 2011 AM jazz I have to take the neck off to use the supplied Fender tool otherwise it chews up the pickguard. This could have been solved if Fender would have routed the access pocket just a little longer. Bad design period.

I ordered the tool but have doubts. I tried a 6" ball end Allen and that would not get in there. This is jacked up

This works much better than the T wrench that came with my 2011 Standard American P bass.

Pretty soon I'll have the finest assortment of 3/16 Allen's on the planet.

i took a regular L-shaped 3/16" allen wrench and chopped off the short end just past the curve with a hacksaw; after cleaning it up, i now have a wrench that works better in american standard basses than any of these.

Excellent idea.:)

Was the PG ever replaced? I have a 2002 & a 2010 Fender & have not had the clearance issue.

The T-wrenches work like a charm.

Yeah, I made one of those after reading a suggestion of yours about it - it definitely provides much more leverage than the Fender wrench... I made mine by using a cut-off wheel in a dremel - worked like a champ...

The Fender T hex got the job done.

Type-55 01-03-2013 06:19 AM

Did you have to take the neck off to access the truss rod?
I have to or the pickguard gets chewed up.
