Truss Rod Adjustment Needed?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've got 2 Ric 4003's - a 2009, and a new 2010.

The 2010 has had a great set-up by a luthier, superb action, etc.

The 2009 is as it came from the factory - thing is, the action needs taking down a bit, and the whole neck feels 'tighter'.

Whereas the 2010, fitted with the same strings, is more playable, and strings bend easier, the 2009 just feels more ridgid.

I am going to take it to a luthier to get the action down, etc. However, does the ridgigity sound like neck tension? Would a little truss rod adjustment make the neck feel a bit looser?

Sorry for the daft question - I've had Rics before, and always just played them as they came. I've only become aware after having the new one set up, and feeling how different it plays.

Any ideas?

check your string heighth at the nut. Ricks come from the factory with the nut cut pretty high.

Chances are, your luthier may have filed the slots down a bit on your 2010. That would make it feel less "tight".
