Truss rod "automatically" readjusts itself

Sign in to disble this ad
I adjusted the truss rod on my new bass a few times (tightened it) but after a couple of hours the spacing becomes the same as it was before. Is that something wrong with the neck/truss rod iteslf, or is it a "limitation" because of the wood?

Because of that, I loosened the truss rod abit and set action a little lower, to ease up the strings abit. Hope it was the good thing to do.

is it a relatively new bass?

if so, the wood in the neck is probably just compressing a little...give it another tweak or two or 3....

what are you talking about when you said that you are loosening the truss rod and setting the action lower?

setup 101...get the relief set properly, first

don't loosen the trussrod...it's only going to allow the neck to bow more....that's a counter-intuitive move...

I just figured out that if tightening wasn't having an effect, I'd just stop tightening.

It's a new bass, only got it last week.

if you're not confident about trussrod adjustment...stopping is a good move...but it's quite possible that you're trussrod is quite loose at the moment (not really putting much force on the neck)...hence, your neck is pretty free to move, this plus the wood has not been compressed to a point yet, where it will remain stable....

why not take it to a decent repair shop....see if you can sweet talk them into giving you a hand...that or someone you know who's an old hand around guitars and/or basses.

Maybe you need to shim the truss rod adjusting nut with a couple of washers.

If it's gone as far as it will go you've likely run out of threads on the rod.

I do that stuff with the strings loose, then retune and check in a few hours.
