Truss Rod and Bridge Adjustment

Sign in to disble this ad
hey all,

just got a new squier vintage modified 70's jazz bass, wondering in anyone could help me out a little.

i've looked through all the tutorials at the top of the forum and followed them through. i've set up the last couple of basses i've had too, with good results,

however...
on this new bass, i've got the neck as straight as possible (no buzzing/or the same amount of buzzing across the fretboard) and i've been lowering the bridge to get a low action.

but i can't get it anywhere near the kind of action i'd like without it buzzing so bad you can't hear the notes.

so at the minute i'm stuck with the strings about 50mm from the board at the 20th fret, and if i lower it anymore it just makes horrible noise.

any help or advice would be very much appreciated,

cheers,
tim

Sounds to me like you need to have more relief (bow) in the neck. Fenders usually need to have some bow in the neck.

Holding down the E string at the 1st and 15th fret there should be a space about a credit card width around 7th fret and the string. If not then there is not enough relief.

You may also have a fret(s) that are popping out of their slots. You can just look and see if there are spaces under the fret crown and fingerboard. If there is, take a soft block of wood and a hammer and tap it down lightly. It is best to just take the strings off and then put the wood over the fret that is the problem then tap it down. Otherwise you could damage your frets.

Hope this helps.

jeez, 50mm is just under *2 inches*. you're supplying real bad information here........or you've got one heckuva bowed neck. if anyones gonna help, you must be more precise than that. c'mon tim, try again.

Point A: Lock down the relief. How much is relief is in the neck?
Point B: Measure string height at the twelfth fret.

Post the findings here.

It is impossible to advise without having the facts.
