Truss Rod issue '77 Jazz

Sign in to disble this ad
First off I set up all my own guitars and bases for years and I think I am pretty good at it. And I want to fix this myself. Ok just bought a 1977 Ibanez Challenger Bass a high end Fender Jazz copy before the "lawsuits" When I bought it it had a upbow in the neck (not warped) when I went to adjust the truss rod it hit a spot and would not tighten anymore but still too much relief...... I pulled the neck and here is what I have:

Here is the pick guard off the "adjusting lug" (my terms here please follow lol) appears to be to far into the neck??

looking at the heel with the lug out showing the threaded rod

Length of the lug:

Lug showing the female threads and allen head:

And finally the neck joint showhing the exposed male threads and the "nut" set in the neck where the lug makes contact with:

Now what I feel is the problem is that the lug isent long enough. Their is not enough female threads to engage the male, then as it is tightened it bottoms out on the nut in the neck, the truss tightens a little as you righty tighty. Then the lug runs out of female thread and the male threads of the rod makes contact with the bottom of the allen head part of the lug (their is evidence of this) This prevents further tighting of the truss rod.

So Am I crazy? or right?

Can I ge a longer lug? or just use some washers or a sleeve to put some "meat" in between the "lug" and the "nut" in the neck? Preventing the lug from bottoming out? Any insight?

My guess is (and Ive seen it b/f) is too use some washers or a spacer?? Im pretty sure that would do the trick, just make sure you get enough thread contact and do not strip out the bullet or truss rod thread... washers are good because they can be done in increments.

I have heard that as well. Try some washers... You can always take them out if you need to later.
