truss rod nut

Sign in to disble this ad
The "key hole" on the truss rod nut of my 1993 Precision has pretty much been rounded out by the last owner(s).
This hasn't been a problem so far as I've been using .35 gauge roundwounds. I put on a set of .50 flats for the extra "oomph" that I felt I needed (which I got!!), but obviously need to adjust the neck accordingly as now the action has risen considerably (not to mention the wider strings are tighter anyway) and it's a bit of a strain to play.

Is this the end for my particular neck using heavy gauge strings, or can truss rods be easily replaced?

Cheers,
matt s.

You should be able to replace the nut, one way or another.

If the neck's still straight, you could always take it off and "shim" the screws that are "Inboard".
It's an old rockers bodge, but does the job of tilting the neck back, which lowers the action.
The thicker the shim, the lower the action.

Yes. The "keyhole" of the trussrod is simply a nut on the end fo the rod. It is intentionally made from an alloy that is softer than the rod itself, so that misuse is more likely to destroy the nut rather than the threads on the rod itself.

So, you should be able to just remove the nut from the end of the trussrod and replace it.
