Truss rod nut comes off - Kawai F-2B bass

Sign in to disble this ad
I just got a Kawai F-2B (I believe - no model number anywhere) bass from a yard sale. Not sure the year, but it looks 70s or 80s. It's apparently the "poor man's Alembic".

The neck needs a little tweaking, however, it's not a hex key, like my other newer basses, but a nut. I got the right size, but the nut comes off! All that is left is a threaded bolt... I have no idea how to adjust the truss rod? Any ideas?

It's a neck through, there are no entry points in the neck pickup cavity either.

Thanks

the nut came off?

Did you unthread it, counterclockwise, or is it stripped inside?

I unthreaded it. No it is not stripped. It works fine...as a nut and bolt. Clean. It looks like a normal nut and bolt (threaded end only obviously, I can't see the other side).

Here is a photo of the nut. Sorry for the poor quality.

Looks fine to me. Generally, you have to tighten the nut, to neck adjust. If it's bowed the other way, take it to a pro.

Does the neck have forward bow? If so, you should be able to
lessen the relief by turning the nut clockwise, as you're looking at it from the headstock. I'd suggest just snugging it up, and loosening the strings before you do any further tightening, which you should do in small increments, no more than 1/4 turn, 1/8 would probably be more appropriate since you're a novice.
