Question Truss Rod w Nut Adjust (vs Allen) - HELP!

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all,

I just got an older Peavey Foundation. I went to adjust the truss w allen wrenches in hand and when I pulled the cover, I saw that the truss has a nut on the end vs a allen head. So couple of questions:

1 - what do you usually use to adjust these with (socket or special tool, etc)?

2 - The truss adjustment is at the top of the headstock (if that makes a difference). Which way to I turn the nut (clockwise or counterwise) to add relief to the neck?

Sorry, I;ve just never done one with a nut before. Thanks!

I had an old Peavey that had a nut on the truss rod as well, real pain in the...

but a socket on a nutdriver handle just fit into the cavity so I was able to tweak the rod.

In general, truss rods are "Righty Tighty - Lefty Loosey".

If you can't find out for sure from Peavey (if the manual isn't online, e mail them and they should send you one or at least answer your question), one way to test is, plug a tuner into the bass, and with the strings at pitch, pluck an open string and give the truss rod an 1/8 turn to the right. If the string goes sharp, your taking relief out.

I use a nut driver which has a socket to accept the nut (like a socket wrench does).
I'm not sure what size the Peavey is, but they're cheap enough at hardware stores to buy a few sizes. I use a 5/16" most often.

Sometimes the nut driver is a little too big to fit into the socket hole. I grind down the outside a bit on a grinding wheel.

Clockwise tightens the rod, counter clockwise loosens it, no matter which end of the neck the nut is at.
