Trussrod rattling inside of neck

Sign in to disble this ad
I just purchased a bass off eBay that has a serious rattle inside of the neck (to the point where even the amp picks it up). The trussrod is also maxed to the treble side. I emailed the seller and let him know of the situation.

I've never come across this problem before. My guess is that he or someone else tweaked the rod a little too far breaking it in some fashion.

What would cause this to happen and is it something that can be fixed (and how expensive of a job would it be)?

Thanks!

If that's not in the description or he takes returns, I would give it back to him. The return shipping will be a lot cheaper than a replacement truss rod, depending on the bass. If it is maxed out one way, can it be turned the other way?

In my experience a broken trussrod turns freely.

Perhaps a trussrod nut washer or few would help.

That has been my experience too. What would cause it rattle inside of the neck?

Longshot but if the trussrod nut doesn't turn at all maybe the rod is busted and the the nut was glued in.

"maxed to the treble side"

What do you mean by this?

The trussrod will not turn any more towards the treble side of the fretboard, or counterclockwise if looking looking down the headstock. It will turn towards the bass side or clockwise but not without a challenge.

I have removed truss rods from some basses and they were wrapped in a material that keeps them from rattling. I'm not sure all basses would have this, but at least one Rickenbacker I worked on had this material on the rod.

The bass is a Gibson Les Paul Money Bass. I have never experienced anything like it before. Contacted the seller, he is reluctant to take it back but I am covered under eBay buyer protection. I also offered to pay for return shipping to help the guy out.

So it won't LOOSEN, and doesn't want to tighten, and it's rattling?

Back to the seller--you don't want to step in this.

Seconded.

Sounds a lot like a busted TR, not impossible, but pretty hard to repair.

If he is reluncetant to take it back then he must know of the issue and that was his reason for dumping it on the bay. Hoping to just get rid of it without lashback. Atleast you are protected with e bay
