Tuner issues

Sign in to disble this ad
I got my new to me peavey foundation last week. Its a really great bass but it seems to have a problem. The thing just seems to want to detune itself. I put new strings on it last week, but Ive stretched them out so it shouldnt be a problem. The strings however are webstrings, so the cheapness might have something to do with it. The tuners I believe are gotoh ones with the elephant ears and open gear. It doesnt downtune itself alot, maybe just 5 cents or so but it seems to happen within a few minutes of tuning. Any ideas?

Start looking for what's moving. Are the tuning machine bushings squirting out? Are the tuning machines screwed down? Neck bowing? Neck joint loose? String anchors not seated against stop surface in the bridge? Is the bridge mounting solid? Could be the strings, but I'd expect them to break at some point. Metal can't stretch forever.

Most likely thing to check: are the strings installed correctly? End of string bent and inserted into the tuner? Do the wraps around the tuner start high and wind down over the string to lock it in place? It's important to cut the strings LONG enough that you have at least a couple of wraps over the string, and having the length also helps wind the string down toward the base of the tuner for a slightly sharper break angle over the nut.

Ok well I just fixed it. For some reason the ferrules for the tuners werent hammered all the way in and one of the tuners was missing the washer so it wasnt staying tight enough.
