Tuners Breaking My Strings?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a Squire Jazz Bass and over the past year (since I have owned this bass) I have broken three strings. The first was the stock E string, the second was the G string from a set of GHS Flea Bass Boomers, and the third was a D string from a set of Rotosound 77's. I'm starting to think the tuners may have sharp edges which is causing the strings to snap. My next set is going to be a set of La Bella 760M's but I'm afraid of a similar thing happening more so because these strings aren't exactly cheap. I use the standard EADG tuning, like my action high and I do not use a pick. Any suggestions?

Very unlikely that the tuners are somehow responsible. Cab you post a couple of pics of your bass? I'd like to see the headstock and the bridge.
Where exactly did the strings break?

You could also check for sharp edges on the tuners, and if there is anything just file it down. How many wraps do you have around the tuner pegs?

All three strings broke at the tuners leaving the remaining circle shaped curl on the tuning peg, and the straight portion of the string hanging on the bass by the bridge.

edit: the reason why there is a random roundwound on at the moment is because the missing string was making tension uneven.

@dmusic: there are 4 wraps on the current E string, 2 on the G and A, and the D before it broke had 3.
