Tuners for Squier Vintage Modified 70s Jazz

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all,

Can someone please suggest some tuners that will fit my Squier Vintage Modified 70s Jazz. I know a few people here have modified theirs, and I want to change the tuners out.

If possible, I want tuners that are available in black.

Check this thread. Lots of info on modding Squier VM's.

Modding Your VM Squier Bass!?

I read somewhere that tuners for MIM Jazzes are direct replacements. Just found this in another thread here on TB:

I recently bought a Hipshot 'B' bridge off a friend of mine & I slapped it on my Squier VM Jazz. Lovin' it!

I'm also planning to buy some chrome Hipshot HB7 tuners (a direct replacement, according to Jason @ Hipshot), a chrome Hipshot 2-string retainer and one of the new Hipshot (are you sensing a trend here? ) thumb rests in black (for a vintage look) to complete my mods of the bass.
They make these tuners in black also.

Good Luck!

I've just done some measuring, and I think the Hipshot HB1s should fit. I might have to redrill the mounting holes, but nothing too major.

Can anyone confirm?

The HB7 tuners are a direct replacement. I e-mailed Hipshot and spoke with Jason (the owner's son). They drop right in - no need to re-drill.

I got a used set from a fellow TB'er and they work (and look) great!

Edit: Just noticed that was me that 'LuvMusic' quoted! LOL!!

Just bought some HB7s (on advice from this post) for my VMJ, and they are not a direct fit. A slight amount of redrilling for the mounting screws is necessary. No big deal; just thought I'd share my experience.

Hmmm, that's very strange. My VMJ is an '06... maybe the tuners were changed in the following years' models?

Sorry about that, Mesa. Definitely wasn't trying to steer you wrong there!

No worries at all. I very much appreciate your advice and everyone else's who may be modding out their Squiers. It's really a fun project, and ultimately at pretty little cost for the sweetness of the end result!!

The tuners will work out just fine. One of the mounting screw holes is off by maybe ~2mm. I don't care, and there's no way to tell once they're mounted.

I've switched out the stock bridge for the Hipshot vintage bent bridge (exact fit) and I will be putting in some Nords pronto.

Add some LaBella Deep Talkin' flats, and I'll be playing like the lost child of Berry Oakley and Jamerson (like maybe if that child were 3 years old and barely capable )

Go vintage all the way!

You'll have to drill, but these are larger and you won't see the old screw holes.
