Tuning Key Rattle

Sign in to disble this ad
I just got a used peavey fury on craigslist. The guy told me tuning key for the A string was rattling but I didn't even notice it and it didn't seem like a big deal, especially since he was letting the bass go for under 100. Now that I've plugged it into my line 6 pod I can hear it through my headphones and it's terribly annoying. It's not really a problem through an amp, though.

From what I can tell, the only thing that is loose is the top part of the tuning key (the cloverleaf, i guess?). I had my friend push that key down lightly while I played and there was no more rattle. When he pushed down on other keys the rattle was still going on.

Any suggestions on what I can do to alleviate the problem would be appreciated. I'm new to bass and guitars in general so I'm not too comfortable messing with things, but this seems like a problem I might be able to fix.

The Peavey Fury went through several design changes. It was made with both open and enclosed tuners.

If the guitar has open tuners like the cloverleaf you describe, it is simple to stabilize the button. Simply wick a drop of liquid thin CA glue into the joint where the cloverleaf plate and the shaft meet.

If it has enclosed tuners, tighten the screw. But go easy, this also adjusts the tension of the tuner via a bent washer. The flatter the washer, the tighter the tuner. Once the washer straightens it is a difficult to bend it again.
