Tuning machine screws - new screw holes

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys,

I'm fitting black wilkinson cloverhead tuning machines on my new VM Jazz bass. Since the holes on the standard tuners doesnt match with the new ones I have to make new holes.

My question is:

Can I just screw them in by 'force', or should i drill holes before I put in the screws?

I'm also fitting covers on it, can I screw them right in, or should I drill on beforehand on those?

Always drill a pilot hole whose diameter equals that of the shank of the screw.
For ultra-hard wood one may have to go slightly larger.

definitely pre drill. it will protect the finish and ensure you don't break those tiny little tuner screw

So how did the wilkinson's fit? the plates are bigger than stock, any problems or suggestions?
