Unhappy Tuning Pegs are way too soft

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey so i bought a new used yamaha p-bass, but the tunig knobs for the 3rth and 4rth string have almost no friction at all :/ When tring to harden them the friction is good, but when i touch the just a little bit in the opposite direction (to lower the strings) they just move like air, they dont move by themselves, but they do untune to easily. Any ideas on how to fix this?
Thanks

Taking the pressure off a worm and ring gear is like that unless there's a friction drag or 'braking' device in the gear set.

Running A&B Cranes and Motor Whaleboat davits in the Navy were the same way - hard up, easy down. That's the way that gear system is supposed to work.

Perhaps you are used to another guitar that had some friction in the ****** motion - but I don't see much of a problem in that with a bass.

BTW: That gear set is designed to not yield to pressure and even to lock tighter under pressure.

Some uninformed people who complain about tuners losing adjustment should know that's bunk. It's the temperature changes on the strings that causes any de-tuning, not the gear set itself slipping.

Bunk is a strong word. In this case it is absolutely the correct word.

Always tune up to pitch, never down. If you go to far up, bring it back down below and back up to pitch. Always.

Roger that. Some tuners are tension-variable, including Hipshot Ultralites and early (?) Yamaha Fender-esque models. I like mine fairly snug when moving in either direction but, as mentioned, always tune up to pitch.

To the OP: got a pic?
