Measure the hole for the tuner. You need a tuner whose posts will fit the hole, and 1/2" and 3/8" refer to the diameter of those holes.

Wrong.

1/2" and 3/8" refer to the diameter of the tuning peg's string post.

The hole in the headstock is for the ferrule to fit, and they are quite a bit bigger than the string post diameter.

Right . . . the 1/2" string post model is designed to fit 11/16" headstock holes and the 3/8" string post model is designed to fit 9/16" headstock holes.

Oh snap, got it wrong!

Yeah listen to the other guy, not me. I'm always scared of buying tuners or necks without tuners for this reason.

What fits in a 3/4" hole? (or 17mm)???
I bought a Charvel body from Craigslist the other day and I'll need everything from pickups to tuning pegs. I never knew the holes were so big.
I looked around for a bit to research and I'm finding a lot of stuff that's 11/16 and 1/2" type stuff.

The pegs appear to be 3/8", along the lines of the Gotoh GB7. Not a bad machine but I much prefer the Hipshot Ultralite 3/8's. You'll occasionally find them in the TB classifieds.

17mm = 0.66929"

3/4 = 0.750"

There is a big difference between those two numbers. How are you measuring the hole?

With a set of calipers. It was 3/4" with the calipers, and I looked online to find some tuners but didn't find any in that size that were that big. I did however find some that were 17mm, So i kinda looked at it with a ruler and it was around 17mm.
Hence the
"(or 17mm)???"

I wasn't sure which it was. I'll check my measurement when I get home in a few hours at lunch.

11/16 = 0.6875.

I'll bet that's your number.

There appears to be a slight taper towards the top, which is more towards .70
The centers of the holes are all around Ø.662

The ferrules are usually splined and tapered, and are an interference fit in the hole. That's what keeps them in.

I love Hipshot tuners. Light and very accurate.
