Unpacking a New Bass

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a new Sterling by MM SB14 that is scheduled by UPS to be delivered tomorrow.

I have never had the experence of unpacking, inspecting and preparing a new bass that was shipped to me.

Any tips or suggestions for helping me "do it right?"

Thanks!

I just unpacked a G&L L-2000 a little over 2 weeks ago. Take it slooooow. Take pics. Save all your packing just in case you need it to ship back (just a precaution). Enjoy. It's like undressing your bride on your honeymoon.

1) Put on some Marvin Gaye.

2) Light candles and incense.

3) Get nekkid.

You'll figure out the rest.

Seriously, check for cosmetic damage, high frets, assembly errors - that kind of thing. Make sure you look it over in really good light.

Or you can tear into it with abandon, throwing the wrappings aside, then just have your way with it, until you're both all sweaty and spent. You know, just like undressing your bride on your honeymoon.

Enjoy it! Smell it! Listen to it! Lean it up against a chair across the room and just sit there and LOOK at it! Take it all in!

And Ed, maybe you and your bass should get a room. Ha!

Ahhh, Yes, mojo from the start! While this may be humor, I think the "set the mood" theme is good.......except for getting nekkid .

The references to wifes and honeymoons is interesting.......June 25th (the day I posted this) was my wife's and my 14th anniversary!

Thanks for the tips and humor!! More tips always welcome (serious or not)!

I usually take the case out of the box & packing, inspect for any damage that may have happened in shipping (to the case). Then I leave the case for a few hours before opening it. I do this because it's usually very cold here so I wait for a bit so the bass can get closer to room temperature but gradually. Then I open it and drool all over it...

Thanks for the suggestion. Here in Chicago it has been very hot and humid lately. My home has AC and I was thinking it might be a good idea to let the package sit for awhile and adjust to the new temp and humidity levels.

You should have no worries this time of year, unless somehow it shipped being packed in dry ice!

Remember, it has probably been in Chicago for at least a few hours (sitting on the delivery truck), so letting it sit may not make any difference. Unless, of course, there is a huge temperature difference between outside and inside your house.

+1
especially in the winter months, the back of a UPS truck is not heated. It's best to bring the box inside and not even open the box for an hour or two.

Not enough temp differential to worry about. If it were 10 degrees outside and the bass had been sitting on your porch for the afternoon, I'd say let it warm up in the box. but for a difference of - say - 30 degrees (maybe 40) or less, just open 'er up.
