unusual dead spot problem

Sign in to disble this ad
As the title suggests..at practice tonight i noticed a big deadspot on the 4th fret of my E string on my aerodyne strung with fender rounds.

Had the bass for a while and never noticed the problem. i recently had the P pup swapped to a fender original aftermarket pup and this was the first time i had heard the deadspot, well felt it really as the note just had zero body to it when i hit it. i found switching to the jazz pup solo made the situation better.

this problem was also slightly present on the 16th fret of the E string but not nearly as much.

im wondering if this is a problem with pickup height or maybe the new pup is just highlighting an existing problem...

the plot thickens..ok had a chance to try the bass at home, the deadspot persisted so i ruled out the room causing the problem...however when i lowered the pickup it moved the deadspot closer to the nut. currently the 4th fret is fine..but now the 2nd fret is just as dead! huh?!?!?

Were you standing in the same place relative to the cabinet?

I can get all sorts of "dead" or "hot" notes that vary with my location relative to the speaker.

yep i tried standing directly in front, about 5 meters away and even behind the cab. the problem persisted.

Ok, I'd put the old pickup back in and see what happens.
