Upgradeing my Squier P-Bass Affinity

Sign in to disble this ad
So I brought this bass from a yard sale for $50. My friend and I have put in a lot of work into restoring the shell (I even brought a new pickguard today, throughly cleaned it out, new strings, etc)

But I want to revamp it and make it sound more new so here are the details that I know about my bass and I want some input on what would be the best materials to use and also keep price in mind since I have really limited funds:

pick ups
strings
hardware (tuning pegs, volume/tone knobs.

Bass: Squier P Bass Affinity
Strings: Ernie Ball Regular Slinky Bass (2832)
Pick Ups:Split Coil Pickups (according to guitar center)

I don't really know much about modding a bass, but my friend does so if you could fill me in on why it's a good choice, I'd appreciate it.

  1. Don't replace anything just for the sake of replacing it. Know what you're after and determine what the bass is lacking to achieve your goal. I've played plenty of stock Squier Affinity basses and most were capable of being good playable instruments.
  2. The price of a fret level and set up is probably the best money you can spend on the bass.

BTW, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's character's name was spelled H-O-L-M-E-S.

For the cost of all that stuff you can buy a Squier CV P and not touch a thing.

Well here is what I had done with a 2002 Squier p-bass and it actually sounds VERY good.
Put in a Duncan SPB-3 pickup, put on a Leo Quann II bridge, and put on Schaller tuners.
You can get most of these used and in good shape and not alot of cost if you look around...just my 1-1/2 cents. Good luck.
