just unscrew the two screws on each side of each pickup they'll come straight out then take a soldering iron and free them off the pots
then repeat the whole process in reverse to put new ones in

Removing the electronics is easy now that the jack is out of the pickguard. Simply remove the screws in the pickups and lift the electronics free from the body.

Before anyone can give you advice about upgrades it would be nice if you could tell us about your goals for this instrument. For instance, what kind of sound are you looking for? If you play music from different genres how versatile does it need to be?

Ok well this is going to sound like a contradiction but i want a "punk" sound out of because this will be a mish mash Bass i think it could work.

I've only decided to upgrade and customize it since i have just bought my new £500+ Bass.

I also want to give it a paint job, i thinking white with black pickguard but i also have this idea of a little decal on the corner.

Alot of people like Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders for an nice aggressive, grindy P sound. I don't have any personal experience but you might wanna look into them.

Im in the same position as you. I just got an expensive, very good bass, but I want to get a punk sound on my p bass replica. Get some seymore duncans, they are cheap and sound good

I'm still trying to figure out what's wrong with the pickups. I'd leave them alone and change the strings. If THAT didn't work, I'd consider pickups. My bet is that strings and EQ adjustments or effects are all you need.
