Smile usa precision deluxe neck on usacg body?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi,
I am going to be gone for the summer with no bass, and I won't be here to see both parts arrive. I just want some piece of mind if this combination will work. Will a Fender USA Deluxe P-Bass neck fit on a USACG P-Bass body? When I bought the neck, it said that it has a contoured heel, will that change anything? I am mostly worried about the neck being too small for the neck pocket if anything, because I have a great luthier in the LA area who I can trust to cut wood if it ends up being too big.
Thanks!

I wouldn't stake my life on it, but I think you're going to have a problem ... and not for the reason you think. The USA Deluxe P-Bass neck has a few extra frets compared to a stock P or J neck and the USACG Pea body isn't really designed to accomodate them. A competent luthier can probably extend the neck pocket to make it work, but it might end up being more hassle/expense than you ever bargained for. My personal opinion (for whatever that's worth) ... stick to standard spec parts as much as possible. There are all kinds of companies that make good bodies, necks, pickups, electronics and hardware out there and you are much more likely to easily be able to mix, match and experiment if everything is as standard as possible ... just my $ .02. BTW ... USACG makes killer standard Fender spec bass necks that would do very nicely for you.

Thanks so much for the reply. The luthier I go to for all my bass works has always done a great job for me in terms of milling, routing etc., so for the most part I really don't mind having wood cut to accomodate the neck. I was just scared of a fender neck being too small for the body really, which I can't picture how to fix...
I want to put together parts that will in the end make me feel like I don't want another bass, so I really don't mind putting out the money to make myself happy. I really can't live without a 22 fret fender neck believe it or not, and I can't live without a super light-weight swamp ash body... so I wanna make it work.

But for the most part, I can expect the neck to be too big if anything?

Ok, so I talked to my bass tech, and he told me that he could do either the neck pocket or the bridge movement if I really want to keep the neck. Would moving the bridge to a different spot of the body effect the way it sounds? He told me that I wouldn't be able to notice any kind of difference, but then again, I would be handing him money for the job....
what do you guys think?
A) Move the bridge
B) Neck Pocket Adjustment
C) Return the neck for price minus 20% and get a new neck that is 20 frets

Please let me know what you think. From what I can tell, this current 22 fret neck that I have is really a nice neck, would I be getting a worst neck if I got one of the American Standard necks?

I would go with option C) Return the neck for price minus 20% and get a new neck that is 20 frets. Leaving the neck pocket as is and moving the bridge will make it a longer instrument and it may not hang right, balance right or feel ergonomic to you. Adjusting the neck pocket will work but will make it that you won't have very easy playing access to the extra frets you are jumping through all the hoops to be able to have and use. Doing something non standard to the bass will greatly diminish it's resale value if you ever want to go in another direction. It is a complete crapshoot with bass necks from high end to low end ... every one is different ... even within the same make and model and you never quite know how it's gonna be until you get it mounted on the target body and string it up with your favorite strings. I've heard a lotta good things about the USACG bass necks and all things being equal ... they're going to be most likely to mate well with your USACG body and will be your safest bet all the way around. Good luck with the project.
