VM setup questions/help please

Sign in to disble this ad
I bought a Squier VM jazz from the classified and its a beautiful instrument, however, I really dislike the setup.

String height is much higher than I like. Is there anyway to lower them without changing the nut? I've already got the bridge as low as it will go. Nut does seem higher than my other basses. (this is my only Fender so maybe it's normal to be this high)

Simple question first conerning the intonation. My open notes are dead on key, however, all fretted notes are off +20-30. Is this too much? I've adjusted the bridge but it only makes it worse.

thanks

My VM fretless definitely needed the nut filed. I knew this when I bought it though, and assumed that it was just part of the reason it was such a good deal

I'm having the same issue, the action was really high when I got it, and I have tried twice to lower the action, with limited success. I never thought about the nut.....

I also think the frets could use some "dressing" to tweak the heights here and there.

I guess you can't ask for too much considering the price, it's a really nice instrument, spending a few dollars more for a Luthier to make it top notch isn't a bad deal in my mind.

Check ... in this order:
  • Neck relief
  • neck angle
  • saddle height
  • nut height

If relief is OK, then perhaps the angle is off and you need a shim in the neck pocket. You'll also have to address any buzzing (tall frets, etc).

I have a VM fretless, and the action is GREAT after I set it up. That said, I played no less than EIGHT of 'em before finding one that I knew I could set up to my satisfaction. Quality was quite variable from example to another.
