Volume conflicts between strings.

So, I have a 1985 Ibanez Roadstar Series II bass, that I love and will never trade or sell. I borrowed it to my brother to learn on, and when he then got his own bass I took it back, and then again with my Nephew. He cut his teeth and figured out that he actually liked playing bass on it, and then went out and got his own!

I like this bass is good enough to keep beginners playing long enough to fall in love with playing bass!

Anyway, and Issue I've always had with it is that the D and G strings fall off considerably in terms of fullness in tone. They just seem to lack what the E and A have, and what a normal bass has all the time. Each string sounding full and resonant..
What could be the issue? I've had a lot of different strings on this bass, all coming back to the same issue..

Have you tried adjusting the level of the pickups so that they are higher under those strings? They don't have to be even.

Actually, upon further inspection.. It seems to be the A and D strings that are losing the fullness. There's a lot of drop off between the E and the A..

Interesting. Otherwise, this bass sounds really cool.. It's somewhere between the P thumpiness and a Ric's metallic grind sound!

+1

Pickup height adjustment should solve all your problems. Old/dead strings can be a culprit too.
